Evaluation Questions
  • How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our local radio station is based upon a more modern feel rather than playing alot of old and slow music, we decided that we would rather have a more local twist on radio 1xtra. Even though we knew that this is not a local radio station we identified certain aspects that we needed to change and make alot more local. Things as the news, and the way that the DJ's spoke to the public. The audience that we felt would relate to our radio station be both the male and female genders, but with a age range of around 16 - 35/40. We also didnt want to limit our listeners and further than that and wanted to make sure that all listeners could listen to the radio station rather than having to be from a certain group or background.

How Is Gender Representated In Hustle?

In this essay i will be looking at how gender is representated in hustle through the use of; mise en scene, camera angles, editing and and sound. In this clip, it consists of a woman loosing a ring that her husband had brought for her, and also she puts up a reward for the retrivel of the ring. Once knowing this the shop assistant trys to do everything in his power to find it, but when he finds out some other man has he wasn't best pleased!

Mise en Scene has been used in ways such as having a old woman, looking quite scruffy surounded by alot of bright lighting and colourful dresses, she is dressed in very dark dull colours showing us a great sense of vunerability, she is also very put down when the shop assistant tells her that the dress she wanted was 800 or so pounds and was at the bottom end of the collection that they had in. This therefore made her feel very worthless and cheap. Another way that Mise en Scene has been used in this clip was when the man were sat in the the gentlemans club, with very swept back heart, wearing very nice, well cut suits and smoking cigars with whiskey. This to me tells me that they feel that they have a very great sence of power, or they think that they have a great sence of power. A final atribute that Mise en Scene gives to the representation of gender is throught out the whole of the clip, both male and female to me look as if they are taking turns in having the most noticable dominance over one another, female has most dominace at the beginningg, where the blonde lady looking at the dresses looks over to the female who is being told how much the dresses, she almost looks as if she is looking down her nose at her. And it shoes that male have dominance when the man finds the ring in the shop. He is looking very dapper in his suit and holding the ring out of the way of the sales assistant. This shows that he will not believe that he is looking for the ring and just walks out of the shop without having to look back.
